Our Philosophy

What is Tae Kwon Do?

Tae Kwon Do is an ancient art of Korean self-defense. Translated from Korean, Tae means "to kick" or "to strike with foot", Kwon means "fist" or "to strike with hand", and Do means "discipline" or "art". Taken together, Tae Kwon Do means "the art of kicking and punching".

Modern day Tae Kwon Do has been developed over many centuries. The sport is a unique martial art incorporating both the quick, straight line movements that characterize the various Japanese styles and the flowing circular movements of most Chinese systems. But more than this, what truly distinguishes Tae Kwon Do is its varied and uniquely powerful kicking techniques. The prominent use of the leg and the emphasis on kicking techniques set Tae Kwon Do apart from all other martial arts systems. However, Tae Kwon Do is far more than a system concerned only with physical power. The art helps reinforce the moral development of its students.

Tae Kwon Do is the name of the martial art turned modern international sport, which has been independently developed over about 20 centuries in Korea. The main feature of Tae Kwon Do is that it is a free fighting combat sport using bare hands and feet to repel opponents.

Our belief is that a Tae Kwon Do trained person is self-confident, not only in physical aspects but also in their mental discipline, because they have developed superior techniques for personal defense by using their entire bodies.

For a Tae Kwon Do person, their entire body is a weapon and is easily able to attack and beat off an aggressor with hands, fists, elbows, knees, feet or another part of his/her body.
